September 2018 Blog
Welcome to September! Where does the time go?
The national CERT conference held recently in Naples Florida drew about 250 attendees, including at least two dozen folks who traveled there from California. This was a great opportunity to mingle with other CERT members and to catch up on what some of the other teams across the nation are doing. I came away with several new ideas that we might look at implementing into our program here. More to come on that later!
As far as the merger of the three city teams is concerned, it looks like we will be able to start our new Consolidated Fire Department at the beginning of the new year, and with it, San MateoCconsolidated Fire Department CERT. We must now speed up our preparedness efforts and make sure that we are as ready as possible when the merger finally happens. At this point in time I am meeting regularly with representatives from each of the three city teams to discuss all the various issues that we must be comfortable with, including operating procedures, policies, training and more. I can confirm that the requirement to attend four events per year will bereduced to two events per year. With the merger of the three teams comes many exciting possibilities including shared resources and training opportunities for all of us, and we are very excited about this!
Spread the Word: We have a new series of CERT classes beginning in San Mateo on Tuesday evenings beginning September 18 with skills day on November 3 in San Mateo. As for Foster City, we are starting a series of CERT classes on Saturdays beginning on October 27, with a Skills Day on Saturday, November 17. Please make a note of the Skills Days, and plan on coming out to help us as we love to see everybody supporting us on these!
Also, please make a note that the San Mateo County Disaster Preparedness Day is coming on Saturday, September 22 at the San Mateo fairgrounds. We are looking for volunteers to help staff our tables at that event, so please have a look on Neon for the event and sign up if you wish to help. Also, make a note that Foster City’s Open House Event is on Saturday, October 6 at Fire Station 28 in Foster City. There will be lots to see and many activities for the kids. Stop by and see us from 10 AM until 2 PM. Again, if you wish to help out at this event, it is up on the calendar in Neon.
