Back in the days when I worked for FEMA, a great deal of emphasis was placed on what they called being “FEMA Flexible”. What that meant was, in a disaster response anything could change, and it probably will. Staff were constantly reminded of the need to remain flexible to changes of plans, locations, assignments or schedules.

This philosophy holds true across all aspects of emergency response, and it should not be taken lightly if we want to succeed as members of an Emergency Response Team.

As much as it is reassuring to know all the details of whatever we are involved with, it should never be forgotten that those details can change. If we do not keep an open mind to that, we will suffer undue stress.

How adaptable to change are you?
